This document supports installing an optional solid-state disk drive (SSD) on Tektronix 7 Series DPO instruments. This kit is a collection of parts that, once installed, configure the instrument with a SSD with a closed embedded operating system (standard) or a Microsoft Windows 10 operating system (optional).

Data types on SSD compared to base instrument
The SSD holds user data (acquisition data, operating system). All data related to licenses, calibration, and SPC (Signal Path Compensation) are stored in NVM on the instrument backplane board. This enables you to have multiple SSDs for the same instrument.

Differentiating WIN and LNX SSDs
The WIN and LNX SDD labels differ as follows:

• The 7-LNX-UP SSD shows Standard Embedded O/S SSD For 7 Series DPO on the label beneath the barcode.
• The 7-WIN-UP SSD shows Windows 10 SSD 7-WIN for 7 Series DPO beneath the barcode.

If you have multiple SSDs, you can determine which you have by reading the labels.

The optional SSD assembly installs in the rear of the instrument. To remove a previously installed SSD, reverse these steps. Contact your nearest Tektronix, Inc. Service Center or Tektronix Factory Service if you need any installation assistance.

Personal injury can occur when lifting and moving the instrument. The instrument is heavy. Use a 2 person lift to move the instrument.

1. Remove all cables from the front and rear of the instrument, including the power cord.
2. Locate the removable SSD on the rear panel of the instrument.
3. Unscrew the two thumbscrews on either side of the SSD as shown and slide out the SSD tray.
4. Slide the new SSD tray into the slot and tighten the two thumbscrews to secure the tray in the instrument.

After installing a Windows SSD, go to the Power on Windows for the first time and Activate Windows procedures. These procedures do not apply when installing the 7-LNX-UP option.

The instrument goes through a series of configuration boot-ups that require manual intervention when first powering up a new (never-installed) Windows drive in an instrument. Once the drive is configured, the instrument boots into Windows and starts the oscilloscope application each time thereafter.

The Windows operating system shipped from Tektronix is in a “deferred activation” state. The first time you turn on an instrument with a newly installed Windows drive, the operating system may attempt to activate itself, depending on whether the instrument is connected to a network or not.

Assess activation behavior
The following information will help you determine if Windows activation is occuring and what action is required, if any.

The instrument is not connected to any network

Verify Windows activation

The Windows-based oscilloscope application interface appearance and behavior is exactly the same as the base instrument, with these exceptions:

The Windows TekScope application does not automatically update when newer versions are released. You need to have any active maintenance license (subscription, perpetual, or floating license within its term) to update the TekScope application. You will need to manually download and install the newer software. The oscilloscope application cannot be running when installing the software. To update the Windows TekScope version of the oscilloscope application software:

The instrument is connected to a network

1. Download the instrument firmware and install onto a USB drive:

2. To install firmware on embedded OS instruments:
   • Turn on the instrument and wait for the instrument to fully boot up.
   • Insert the USB flash drive into the instrument USB Host port.
   • The instrument detects the updated firmware and opens a dialog box. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the firmware.

     Do not turn off the instrument or remove the USB flash drive until the instrument finishes installing the firmware. The instrument displays a message when it is OK to turn off. Remove the USB drive before turning on the instrument.
